How a migraine forecast works

A migraine forecast is not a prediction that you will get an attack. It is an estimate of how much the atmosphere is about to move, scored against the conditions that research has linked to attacks in weather-sensitive people. Whether that matters for you depends on whether you are one of them, which is something only your own logged history can answer.

What the research actually supports

Weather is a commonly reported trigger but not a universal one. In a study of 1,207 migraine patients published in Cephalalgia, 53.2 percent named weather as a trigger. That places it fourth, behind stress at 79.7 percent, hormones at 65.1 and skipped meals at 57.3, and just ahead of sleep disruption at 49.8. A separate analysis of 7,054 emergency visits in Neurology found headache risk rose about 7.5 percent for every 5C increase in temperature over the preceding 24 hours, with lower barometric pressure showing a smaller but measurable effect.

The consistent finding across this literature is that change matters more than absolute value. A steady 1000 hPa is unremarkable. A fall from 1015 to 1000 across a day is the pattern people report feeling.

Why the forecast and your head disagree

Three things routinely break the link between a forecast and an attack. Attacks often begin hours before the pain, during the prodrome phase, so the trigger you blame may have arrived while you already felt fine. Triggers also stack, and a pressure drop on a well-rested day may do nothing while the same drop after a poor night does not. And elevation shifts your entire baseline: Denver sits near 840 hPa and Cheyenne near 814, so a reading that would signal a deep storm at sea level is an ordinary Tuesday there.

Using a forecast without letting it run your life

The useful move is not to cancel plans on high-risk days. It is to stop stacking. On a day the barometer is set to move, protect the variables you control: keep sleep and meals on schedule, hold caffeine steady, stay ahead on water, and keep acute medication within reach rather than at home in a drawer. That converts weather from an ambush into a scheduled risk.

Above all, verify the premise before organising around it. Log attacks for eight to twelve weeks with pressure recorded automatically alongside them, then look at whether your attacks actually cluster on volatile days.
